สายหมอกยามเช้าปกคลุมไปทั่วหุบเขาผาเสือ อากาศหนาวเหน็บเสียดแทงเข้าไปถึงกระดูก ขวัญเดินลัดเลาะไปตามลำธารที่ไหลเอื่อย เสียงฝีเท้าของเขาย่ำลงบนใบไม้แห้งดังกรอบแกรบเป็นจังหวะเพียงหนึ่งเดียวในความเงียบสงัดของป่าลึก ทันใดนั้น กลิ่นคาวเลือดจางๆ ลอยมาปะทะจมูก ขวัญชะงักฝีเท้า สัญชาตญาณนายพรานในตัวตื่นตัวเต็มที่ เขาค่อยๆ แหวกพุ่มไม้ออกและต้องชะงักกับภาพที่เห็นตรงหน้า

ร่างของชาวบ้านวัยกลางคนนอนพาดอยู่บนโขดหินริมน้ำ ผิวหนังของเขาสีขาวซีดราวกับกระดาษที่ถูกทิ้งไว้กลางสายฝน ขวัญรีบเข้าไปตรวจดู ร่างกายนั้นเย็นเฉียบและไร้ซึ่งหยดเลือด สิ่งที่น่าประหลาดใจที่สุดคือไม่มีบาดแผลจากการฉีกขาดของสัตว์ร้าย ไม่มีรอยเขี้ยวที่คอ ไม่มีรอยเล็บที่หน้าอก มีเพียงรูเล็กๆ สองสามรูที่ดูเหมือนถูกเจาะด้วยเข็มขนาดใหญ่ที่บริเวณเส้นเลือดใหญ่ใต้ลำคอ รอบๆ ศพนั้นไม่มีร่องรอยการต่อสู้ แต่สิ่งที่ทำให้ขวัญขนลุกซู่คือรอยเท้าเสือขนาดมหึมาที่ประทับลงบนโคลนเลนข้างศพ รอยเท้านั้นดูใหม่เอี่ยมเหมือนเพิ่งเกิดขึ้นไม่นาน

ชาวบ้านที่ตามมาสมทบเริ่มส่งเสียงร้องด้วยความหวาดกลัว “เจ้าป่า! เสือสมิงมันกลับมาแล้ว!” เสียงตะโกนนั้นดังก้องไปทั่วป่า ขวัญยืนนิ่ง มองดูรอยเท้าเสือนั้นด้วยความสับสน ในใจของเขาเต็มไปด้วยคำถาม ถ้าเสือกินคนจริงๆ ทำไมศพถึงยังสมบูรณ์ขนาดนี้? ทำไมเลือดถึงหายไปหมดราวกับถูกสูบออก? ความทรงจำอันเจ็บปวดเกี่ยวกับพ่อของเขาที่จากไปในป่าแห่งนี้เริ่มย้อนกลับมา พ่อที่เขาก็เชื่อมาตลอดว่าถูกเสือฆ่าตาย แต่วันนี้ความสงสัยเริ่มก่อตัวขึ้นในใจอย่างเงียบเชียบ

เสียงระฆังจากวัดบนยอดเขาผาเสือดังกังวานเป็นจังหวะช้าๆ ราวกับจะช่วยปลอบประโลมจิตใจที่ตื่นตระหนกของชาวบ้าน ในศาลาวัดที่เต็มไปด้วยควันธูป หลวงพ่อธรรมนั่งสงบนิ่งบนอาสนะ ใบหน้าของท่านดูอิ่มเอิบและเปี่ยมไปด้วยเมตตา ดวงตาที่หรี่ลงครึ่งหนึ่งดูเหมือนมองเห็นทุกสรรพสิ่ง ชาวบ้านพากันมากราบไหว้ด้วยความศรัทธาสูงสุด ต่างคนต่างเล่าถึงความสยดสยองที่พบเห็นในป่า

“มันไม่ใช่เสือธรรมดาหรอกโยม” หลวงพ่อธรรมกล่าวด้วยน้ำเสียงทุ้มต่ำแต่ทรงพลัง “มันคือวิญญาณบาปที่ฝึกฝนเดรัจฉานวิชา มันสูบเลือดเพื่อต่ออายุและจำแลงกายเป็นมนุษย์” คำพูดของท่านทำให้ชาวบ้านยิ่งหวาดกลัว หลายคนเริ่มร้องไห้และขอให้ท่านช่วยคุ้มครอง หลวงพ่อหยิบประคำขึ้นมาบริกรรมคาถา เสียงสวดมนต์ของท่านดังงึมงำเป็นภาษาแปลกๆ ที่ขวัญไม่เคยได้ยินจากที่ไหนมาก่อน มันไม่ใช่บทสวดที่ทำให้ใจสงบ แต่มันกลับทำให้เขารู้สึกอึดอัดอย่างบอกไม่ถูก

ขวัญสังเกตเห็นว่าในขณะที่หลวงพ่อสวดมนต์ มือของท่านที่ถือประคำนั้นสั่นเทาเล็กน้อย และมุมปากของท่านขยับในจังหวะที่รวดเร็วเกินไปจนดูคล้ายกับการเคี้ยวอะไรบางอย่าง ขวัญเดินออกมาจากศาลาและพบกับมะลิ น้องสาวของเขาที่มารออยู่ข้างนอก มะลิมีสีหน้าไม่สู้ดีนัก เธอเงยหน้ามองยอดเขาแล้วกระซิบว่า “พี่ขวัญ… หนูรู้สึกเหมือนมีใครมองเราอยู่จากในวัด แต่ไม่ใช่คนนะพี่” ขวัญลูบหัวน้องสาวเพื่อปลอบใจ แต่ในใจเขากลับยิ่งทวีความกังวล สิ่งที่หลวงพ่อพูดกับสิ่งที่เขาเห็นที่ริมน้ำมันดูขัดแย้งกันอย่างสิ้นเชิง เสือที่ไหนจะสวดมนต์ และพระที่ไหนจะมีรังสีที่น่าขนลุกขนาดนี้

คืนนั้น มะลิเริ่มมีอาการประหลาด เธอตัวร้อนรุ่มราวกับไฟสุม แต่ผิวกลับซีดเผือดลงเรื่อยๆ เธอเพ้อถึงเสือตัวใหญ่ที่มีดวงตาเศร้าสร้อย ขวัญตัดสินใจเข้าป่าอีกครั้งเพื่อหาสมุนไพรมาช่วยน้องสาว ท่ามกลางแสงจันทร์ที่สาดส่องผ่านรอยแยกของพุ่มไม้ ขวัญรู้สึกได้ถึงการเคลื่อนไหวที่รวดเร็วรอบตัวเขา ทันใดนั้น เสียงคำรามต่ำๆ ดังขึ้นข้างหลัง เขาหันขวับไปพร้อมกับง้างหน้าไม้ในมือ

ตรงหน้าของเขาคือเสือโคร่งขนาดมหึมา มีรอยแผลเป็นพาดผ่านดวงตาซ้าย แต่มันไม่ได้กระโจนเข้าใส่ มันเพียงยืนจ้องหน้าเขาด้วยดวงตาที่ดูมีความเป็นมนุษย์อย่างน่าประหลาด เสือตัวนั้นคำรามออกมาอีกครั้ง แต่มันไม่ใช่เสียงขู่กรรโชก มันดูเหมือนการเตือนมากกว่า มันพยายามขวางทางไม่ให้ขวัญเดินขึ้นไปยังเส้นทางลับหลังวัด ก่อนที่มันจะหายลับไปในความมืด ขวัญเหลือบไปเห็นเศษผ้าสีเหลืองตุ่นๆ ติดอยู่ที่กิ่งหนามใกล้กับที่เสือยืนอยู่

เขารีบเก็บเศษผ้านั้นขึ้นมาดู มันคือเศษผ้าจีวรที่เก่าและขาดวิ่น แต่มันกลับมีคราบเลือดสีดำข้นติดอยู่ กลิ่นของมันเหม็นเน่าเหมือนซากศพที่ตายมานาน ขวัญเริ่มปะติดปะต่อเรื่องราวในใจ เสือไม่ได้พยายามฆ่าเขา แต่มันกำลังกันเขาออกไปจากบางอย่างที่เลวร้ายกว่า และเศษผ้าจีวรที่เต็มไปด้วยเลือดนี้มาจากใครกันแน่? เมื่อเขากลับถึงบ้าน เขาก็พบกับความตกใจยิ่งกว่า เพราะหลวงพ่อธรรมได้ส่งลูกศิษย์มาบอกว่า “ให้นำตัวมะลิขึ้นไปรักษาที่วัดด่วน มิฉะนั้นวิญญาณของเธอจะถูกเสือสมิงพรากไป” ขวัญมองดูน้องสาวที่อ่อนแรงและมองดูเศษผ้าในมือ ความหวาดกลัวที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดกำลังเริ่มคืบคลานเข้ามาในชีวิตของเขา

บรรยากาศภายในวัดผาเสือยามค่ำคืนเปลี่ยนไปอย่างสิ้นเชิง ลมพัดแรงจนยอดไม้เสียดสีกันดังเกรียวกราวดูน่าขนลุก ขวัญลอบเร้นกายผ่านความมืดขึ้นไปยังกุฏิของหลวงพ่อธรรมที่ตั้งอยู่แยกตัวออกไปบนหน้าผา หัวใจของเขาสั่นระรัวเมื่อคิดถึงมะลิที่ถูกกักตัวไว้ด้านในเพื่อรักษาอาการป่วย เมื่อเขาเข้าใกล้ผนังไม้เก่าๆ เสียงหนึ่งก็ดังลอดออกมา มันไม่ใช่เสียงสวดมนต์ที่ไพเราะอย่างที่ชาวบ้านเคยได้ยิน แต่มันคือเสียงพึมพำที่ขุ่นมัว ห้าวเป้ง และซ้อนทับกันหลายมิติราวกับมีคนหลายคนกำลังพูดออกมาจากลำคอเดียวกัน

ขวัญค่อยๆ แนบตาลงกับรอยแตกของฝาไม้ แสงเทียนสลัวภายในกุฏิเผยให้เห็นภาพที่ทำให้เขาแทบหยุดหายใจ หลวงพ่อธรรมไม่ได้นั่งหลับตาในท่าสมาธิ แต่ท่านกำลังก้มตัวลงเหนือร่างของมะลิที่นอนไม่ได้สติ ในมือของท่านถือจอกทองเหลืองที่บรรจุของเหลวสีแดงข้น กลิ่นคาวเลือดโชยออกมาอย่างรุนแรงจนขวัญต้องเอามือปิดจมูก หลวงพ่อค่อยๆ รินของเหลวนั้นลงในปากของมะลิพร้อมกับท่องมนต์ดำที่ฟังดูเหมือนเสียงกระซิบของวิญญาณร้าย ผิวหนังของหลวงพ่อเริ่มเปลี่ยนสี มันดูซีดและสากเหมือนหนังซากศพ และในวินาทีที่ท่านเงยหน้าขึ้น ดวงตาที่เคยเปี่ยมเมตตากลับกลายเป็นสีแดงฉานไร้ซึ่งแววตาของมนุษย์ ขวัญรู้ในทันทีว่าสิ่งที่อยู่ข้างในร่างนั้นไม่ใช่พระสงฆ์อีกต่อไป แต่มันคือบางอย่างที่หิวกระหายและชั่วร้ายเกินกว่าจะจินตนาการได้

ขวัญถูกลูกศิษย์วัดพบตัวและถูกไล่ล่าเข้าไปในป่าลึก เขาหนีตายท่ามกลางความมืดมิดจนกระทั่งเสียหลักตกลงไปในหุบเหวเล็กๆ เมื่อเขาลืมตาขึ้นมาอีกครั้ง เขาก็พบว่าตัวเองติดอยู่ในวงล้อมของชาวบ้านที่ถือคบไฟและหน้าไม้ “ฆ่ามัน! มันถูกเสือสมิงสิงร่างแล้ว!” เสียงของชาวบ้านตะโกนก้องด้วยความโกรธแค้นตามคำเป่าหูของหลวงพ่อ ในขณะที่ลูกธนูกำลังจะถูกยิงออกมา เสือโคร่งยักษ์ตัวเดิมก็กระโจนพรวดออกมาจากพุ่มไม้ แต่มันไม่ได้ทำร้ายชาวบ้าน มันกลับยืนขวางทางเดินและใช้ลำตัวที่ใหญ่โตรับลูกธนูแทนขวัญ เสียงคำรามของมันไม่ได้น่ากลัว แต่มันเต็มไปด้วยความเจ็บปวดและความอัดอั้น

เสือตัวนั้นหันมามองขวัญ ดวงตาข้างที่เหลืออยู่สบตากับเขาเพียงครู่เดียว แต่มันกลับสื่อสารความรู้สึกหมื่นล้านคำออกมา ขวัญเห็นน้ำตาไหลพรากจากดวงตาเสือ มันเป็นแววตาของสัตว์ที่ถูกตราหน้าว่าเป็นฆาตกรทั้งที่พยายามปกป้องชีวิตผู้อื่น เสือคาบคอเสื้อของขวัญแล้วลากเขาเข้าไปในถ้ำลับหลังน้ำตก ที่นั่นขวัญได้พบกับหลักฐานที่สะเทือนใจที่สุด เขาพบย่ามของพ่อที่หายไปหลายปี และอัฐิของเจ้าอาวาสองค์ก่อนที่ถูกซ่อนไว้อย่างมิดชิด ความจริงเริ่มกระจ่างชัดในใจขวัญ พ่อของเขาไม่ได้ถูกเสือฆ่า แต่พ่อถูกฆ่าเพราะล่วงรู้ความลับของปีศาจในผ้าเหลือง และเสือตัวนี้คือผู้ที่คอยเก็บรักษาหลักฐานเหล่านั้นมาโดยตลอดด้วยความหวังว่าสักวันหนึ่งความจริงจะถูกเปิดเผย

ภายในถ้ำลึก ขวัญได้พบกับความจริงที่น่าสยดสยองยิ่งกว่า หลวงพ่อธรรมแท้จริงแล้วคือผู้ที่คลั่งไคล้ในวิชาไสยดำ ท่านได้สังหารเจ้าอาวาสและพรานป่าไปหลายคนเพื่อใช้เลือดเป็นเครื่องสังเวยในการฝึกวิชากระสือและกระหังขั้นสูง เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งความเป็นอมตะ เสือโคร่งตัวนี้ไม่ใช่สัตว์ป่าทั่วไป แต่มันคือ “สิงห์” ลูกศิษย์ผู้ซื่อสัตย์ของเจ้าอาวาสองค์ก่อนที่ถูกคำแช่งของหลวงพ่อธรรมจนต้องกลายร่างเป็นเสือ สิงห์ยอมทนทุกข์ทรมานในร่างสัตว์เดรัจฉานมานานนับทศวรรษเพื่อทำหน้าที่เป็นหูเป็นตาและคอยกันไม่ให้ชาวบ้านผู้บริสุทธิ์หลงเข้าไปเป็นเหยื่อในวัด

สิงห์พาขวัญไปดูรอยสักบùa chúที่ประทับอยู่บนผิวหนังใต้ขนเสือ มันคืออาคมที่สะกดให้เขาไม่สามารถพูดได้และไม่สามารถทำร้ายพระสงฆ์ได้โดยตรง ขวัญทรุดตัวลงคุกเข่าต่อหน้าเสือยักษ์ ความรู้สึกผิดท่วมท้นหัวใจที่เคยจงเกลียดจงชังมันมาตลอด “ข้าขอโทษ… ข้าจะช่วยเจ้าและช่วยน้องสาวของข้าให้ได้” ขวัญสัญญากับสิงห์ด้วยน้ำเสียงสั่นเครือ สิงห์คำรามเบาๆ ราวกับจะยอมรับคำสัญญานั้น ทั้งสองร่วมกันวางแผนที่จะกลับไปเผชิญหน้ากับปีศาจที่ครองวัด แต่พวกเขารู้ดีว่าเวลาของมะลิตามที่หลวงพ่อบอกกำลังจะหมดลง และดวงจันทร์สีเลือดที่กำลังจะมาถึงจะเป็นคืนที่เลวร้ายที่สุด

ขณะที่ขวัญกำลังหาทางกลับไปที่วัด หลวงพ่อธรรมก็ได้รวบรวมชาวบ้านทั้งหมดมาไว้ที่ลานวัดหน้ากองไฟขนาดใหญ่ ท่านยืนตระหง่านอยู่บนแท่นสูง ใบหน้าสงบนิ่งแต่แฝงไปด้วยความอำมหิต “โยมทั้งหลาย ขวัญและเสือสมิงได้รวมหัวกันเพื่อทำลายวัดของเรา บัดนี้มะลิถูกมันพรากจิตวิญญาณไปแล้ว เราจำเป็นต้องเผานางเพื่อชำระล้างสิ่งชั่วร้าย และต้องกำจัดขวัญเสียก่อนที่ความมืดจะปกคลุมหมู่บ้านเรา” ชาวบ้านที่ขาดสติและเต็มไปด้วยความศรัทธาที่มืดบอดต่างพากันโห่ร้องเห็นด้วย

ขวัญปรากฏตัวขึ้นที่ชายป่าพร้อมกับตะโกนบอกความจริง แต่ไม่มีใครฟัง เสียงของเขาถูกกลบด้วยเสียงกลองและเสียงตะโกนสาปแช่ง หลวงพ่อธรรมยกยิ้มที่มุมปากอย่างผู้ชนะ ท่านร่ายมนต์เรียกกระแสลมแรงพัดเข้าใส่ขวัญจนเขาล้มลง พร้อมกับสั่งให้ชาวบ้านมัดขวัญไว้กับเสาไม้ข้างๆ มะลิที่นอนนิ่งอยู่บนกองฟืน “เผามัน!” หลวงพ่อประกาศก้อง เปลวไฟเริ่มลุกโชนขึ้นช้าๆ ความร้อนระอุเริ่มแผดเผาผิวหนัง ขวัญมองไปที่ยอดเขาและหวังเพียงสิ่งเดียว คือขอให้เพื่อนรักในร่างสัตว์ร้ายมาถึงทันเวลาก่อนที่ทุกอย่างจะกลายเป็นเถ้าถ่าน ในใจของเขาไม่ได้กลัวความตาย แต่เขากลัวว่าความชั่วร้ายจะยังคงสวมหน้ากากแห่งความดีต่อไปได้สำเร็จ

เปลวไฟสีส้มปนแดงเริ่มเลียเข้าไปที่ขอบฐานกองฟืน ความร้อนแผ่ซ่านไปทั่วบริเวณลานวัดที่เงียบสงัดจนน่ากลัว ขวัญพยายามดิ้นรนให้หลุดจากเชือกที่รัดแน่นจนบาดลึกเข้าในเนื้อ เขาตะโกนเรียกชื่อมะลิสุดเสียง แต่น้องสาวของเขายังคงนิ่งเงียบราวกับวิญญาณได้หลุดลอยไปแล้ว หลวงพ่อธรรมยืนมองด้วยรอยยิ้มเย็นชาที่มุมปาก มือของท่านกำไม้เท้าหัวกะโหลกแน่น เตรียมพร้อมที่จะดูดซับพลังงานหยดสุดท้ายจากชีวิตบริสุทธิ์ ทันใดนั้น ท้องฟ้าที่เคยมืดมิดกลับกลายเป็นสีแดงฉานราวกับหยาดเลือด เสียงคำรามกึกก้องที่ไม่ได้ยินมานานนับปีดังสะท้อนไปทั่วหุบเขา มันไม่ใช่เสียงคำรามของสัตว์ร้ายที่หิวโหย แต่เป็นเสียงคำรามที่เต็มไปด้วยความโกรธแค้นของเทพเจ้า

ร่างมหึมาของเสือสิงห์กระโจนข้ามกำแพงวัดลงมาท่ามกลางวงล้อมของชาวบ้าน คบไฟใน tay ของผู้คนสั่นระริกด้วยความกลัว สิงห์ไม่ได้หันเขี้ยวเล็บใส่ชาวบ้านที่กำลังขว้างปาสิ่งของใส่เขา แต่มันมุ่งตรงไปที่แท่นสูงของหลวงพ่อธรรม ชาวบ้านหลายคนพยายามจะยิงหน้าไม้ใส่เสือ แต่ลูกธนูเหล่านั้นกลับกระดอนออกราวกับมีกำแพงที่มองไม่เห็นกั้นไว้ หลวงพ่อธรรมเริ่มร่ายมนต์ดำด้วยเสียงที่แหลมสูง ผิวหนังของท่านเริ่มปริแตกออกเผยให้เห็นเนื้อสีดำเน่าๆ ที่อยู่ข้างใน ท่านตะโกนสั่งชาวบ้านว่า “ฆ่ามัน! เสือสมิงจะมากินพวกเจ้า!” แต่ในวินาทีนั้นเอง สิงห์ได้ใช้พละกำลังทั้งหมดกระโจนเข้าใส่แท่นพิธีจนพังครืนลงมา ทำให้ความจริงที่ถูกซ่อนอยู่ใต้ฐานอาสนะเผยโฉมออกมาต่อหน้าสายตาชาวบ้านทุกคน

ท่ามกลางเศษซากของแท่นพิธีที่พังทลาย ชาวบ้านต่างเบิกตากว้างด้วยความสยดสยอง เมื่อเห็นไหดินเผานับสิบใบที่แตกกระจายออก ภายในไม่ได้บรรจุสิ่งมงคล แต่บรรจุเลือดมนุษย์ที่ยังคงส่งกลิ่นคาวคลุ้งไปทั่วบริเวณ กลิ่นนั้นเหมือนกับศพที่ริมน้ำไม่ผิดเพี้ยน หลวงพ่อธรรมที่บัดนี้หน้ากากแห่งความเมตตาหลุดลอกออกไปสิ้นเชิง ร่างกายของท่านยืดขยายผิดรูป แขนขาเรียวยาวนับนิ้วไม่ได้ เล็บสีดำยาวแหลมคมงอกออกมาจากนิ้วมือ ท่านกรีดร้องด้วยเสียงของปีศาจและกระโจนเข้าใส่สิงห์ การต่อสู้ระหว่างเสือโคร่งผู้ซื่อสัตย์กับปิศาจในคราบพระดำเนินไปอย่างดุเดือดท่ามกลางกองไฟที่กำลังลุกไหม้

สิงห์ถูกเล็บของปีศาจตะปบเข้าที่ลำตัวจนเลือดสีแดงสดสาดกระเซ็น แต่เขาก็ไม่ถอยแม้แต่ก้าวเดียว สิงห์ใช้จังหวะที่ปีศาจเผลอ กระโจนเข้ากัดที่ลำคอของมันพร้อมกับฉีกกระชากผ้าจีวรที่เปื้อนเลือดออก เผยให้เห็นรอยสักอาคมสีดำที่เคลื่อนไหวได้บนแผ่นหลังของหลวงพ่อธรรม รอยสักนั้นคือแหล่งพลังของมัน ขวัญที่หลุดจากพันธนาการได้สำเร็จรีบเข้าไปอุ้มมะลิออกจากกองไฟ เขาหันมาเห็นสิงห์ที่กำลังถูกปีศาจใช้ไม้เท้าแทงทะลุสีข้าง สิงห์คำรามด้วยความเจ็บปวดสุดขีดแต่เขาก็ยังไม่ปล่อยเขี้ยวออกจากลำคอของศัตรู แรงอาฆาตและแรงศรัทธาปะทะกันจนเกิดคลื่นกระแทกทำให้ไฟที่ลุกไหม้อยู่ดับวูบลงในพริบตา เหลือเพียงความเงียบและลมหายใจสุดท้ายของสัตว์ร้ายและปิศาจ
